Two cancelled Star Wars games uncovered by Unseen64!
Turns out, Chewbacca once defeated Darth Vader. Unfortunately for everyone’s favorite fuzzball, his victory wasn’t long lived.
In the latest edition of DidYouKnowGaming, Unseen64 unearthed a pair of cancelled Star Wars titles centered around those popular characters.
One game, titled Dark Squadron and pitched by Factor 5, was built upon the ship-based combat of the studio’s Rogue Squadron series. Instead of focusing on the Rebels, it was to revolve around Imperial ships, with Darth Vader being the primary playable character. The inspiration for this spin-off came from two Imperial-centric levels in Rogue Squadron 2: Rogue Leader.
However, Dark Squadron was passed over in favor of an action-adventure Chewbacca game pitched by the LucasArts development team. Chewbacca was meant to be a bounty hunter in this game, which would have focused on the Wookie’s life between episodes III and IV.
Despite being greenlight, George Lucas himself later shut down the Chewbacca project because he allegedly didn’t want a game starring the Wookie. The team working on that game moved their sights onto a new game which eventually turned into Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.
Additionally, the video revealed Factor 5 also spent time developing remastered versions of the Rogue Squadron series on both the Xbox and Wii. The Wii version ran at 60-frames-per-second and included support for a wide-range of Wii controller configurations. It was finally shelved due to legal issues within Factor 5.
