Rogue One trailer No. 2: What it means for Battlefront
The latest Rogue One trailer dropped earlier today.
As I did a breakdown for the previous trailer and because Battlefront’s fourth expansion centers on Rogue One, I figured I’d do another for this trailer. This breakdown will only focus on things that might impact Battlefront.
In case you miraculously haven’t seen the trailer, or just need your fix for the 327th time, here’s it embedded:
New Weapons
As the Director Krennic and his bodyguards march towards Jyn Erso and her father Galen on an unidentified planet, we see a Death Trooper weilding a heavy blaster of some sort. It seems like a modified DLT-19. It could be a DLT-19x; however, the scope is slightly smaller and there is an additional attachment underneath the barrel:
Perhaps we could see this weapon in Battlefront. That said, I think it’s doubtful because there are already two variants of the DLT-19 in the game.
In total, two pauldron-wearing Death Troopers held the DLT-19 variant, while three non-pauldroned troopers handled an unknown carbine rifle:
If I were to place a wager, I’d bet that it’s more likely we’ll see the unknown carbine, which has been featured in previous trailers:
Next, there’s this weapon wielded by Chirrut Imwe:
It certainly looks like it packs a punch. The weapon’s limbs are also reminiscent of the bowcaster. Since this seems like more of a one-shot weapon, I could definitely see this becoming a Star Card.
As a bonus, you could actually see Chirrut carrying this weapon on his back in an EW-exclusive image from June:
There’s also a shot of what looks like Cassian Andor running on Jedha:
I can’t quite make out the weapon, but it’s possible that it’s this rifle from previous trailers:
A Better Look at Scarif
We got several new shots of Scarif, where the Rogue One DLC is set. First is this image, which provides a nice wide shot up to what is presumably an Imperial installation:
Next we get to see the planet’s tropical jungle, lush with bushes. Coupled with the near Rebel, it reminds me of some Vietnam war movies:
While the shot immediately following is more open:
There’s then a shot of three AT-ACTs and the U-Wing. Note that the Walker on the far right isn’t carrying cargo:
You can also see the lack of cargo in the YouTube thumbnail for the trailer.
A couple of thoughts on all of this:
- Perhaps we’ll get a beach map, a jungle map and then a map inside of the Imperial base on Scarif. I’m not sure what the potential fourth map could be, but hopefully it’s different enough from the other three.
- Assuming the DLC’s exclusive mode is multi-stage (as hinted by lead designer Dennis Brannvall) and involves the Death Star plans, perhaps the first phase will be the Rebels needing to destroy the AT-ACTs. Instead of linear game play, like Walker Assault has, the AT-ACTs converge on a single spot from multiple directions. Next, the Rebels have to fight their way up to the Imperial base on a map similar to that first shot. Perhaps it could play like Turning Point. The third stage could take place inside the base. Here the Rebels must fight their way to the top of the base on a very vertical map. Upon reaching the top, Rebels beam the Death Star plans up into space.*
- I’d like to see one of the AT-ACTs with that empty cargo bay. It would be fun to jetpack through the Walker!
- It would be neat if the U-Wing made an appearance in Battlefront. Hopefully it would allow you to transport multiple teammates or perhaps set up a semi-permanent spawn point.
- While it’s been confirmed that we won’t go swimming on Scarif, hopefully the water is shallow enough that players can wade through it. The Frostbite game engine does an excellent job with water and that’s a feature that’s been woefully underutilized in Battlefront so far.
* Depending on how the movie plays out, it’s possible that the Imperial base comes up first as it could be where they steal the Death Star plans. I guess it just depends on how the movie’s story goes.
Space Battles?
This trailer gives us the first glimpse of space battles in Rogue One as X-Wings fly near a space station over Scarif:
The Rebel fleet can also be seen in the background:
While I’ll be curious to see what exactly this space station is (it doesn’t look like the Death Star), I’m dubious space battles will be coming with this expansion. The Death Star DLC seems to be the primarily space-focused DLC, while this upcoming pack will ideally center on ground battles.
Potential New Outfits/Skins
While space battles might not be happening, this Rebel pilot outfit could become a new customization option:
The Imperial outfit worn by Galen Erso could also be a possibility. Instead of an all-olive uniform, the shoulders are a light gray:
There’s also Jyn’s Imperial spy outfit. Seemingly a mix between a TIE Pilot and an Imperial Gunner, it would be cool to either have this as an Imperial customization or perhaps to have Jyn’s outfit change depending on the map:
Jyn’s cellmate, whom Felicity Jones (Jyn’s actor) called “her many tentacled friend“, could perhaps be an option:
Finally, there’s these two guys on the left:
I’m not sure how they might play into the movie, but it seems possible they could become a Rebel customization option. I especially like how they’re some sort of a cyborg lifeform. There’s also a couple of new blasters in that shot, but considering that there are other, more prominently featured weapons, I don’t think of these ones will make it in.
What about Jedha?
It’s probably unlikely, but I’m still holding out a sliver of hope we’ll get some sort of map set on Jedha. As we’re missing out on a Mos Eisley map, the glimpses we have of of Jedha indicate it could provide some excellent urban warfare:
There’s also this awesome and ancient Jedi statue:
However, urban maps require more manual modeling that Scarif might. Additionally, the title of the Rogue One DLCs points that it’ll only feature Scarif. Still, fingers crossed!
Bonus
While not directly related to Battlefront, seeing Darth Vader is always awesome:
