Open beta started for Battlefront II mod with Battlefront III assets

Rebel Trooper in Battlefront III: Legacy.

Battlefront III: Legacy, a mod for Battlefront II, has now entered an open beta.

I previously wrote about the open beta back in September. To download the mod, head on over to Moddb. Note that because this is a beta, issues in the mod are likely to arise.

It was just under 600 MB to download and the previously recommended specs by the modders were (besides owning a copy of Battlefront II):

-(Recommend Patch[es]): Official Patch 1.1, Unofficial Patch 1.3

-2GB of hard drive space (The number may drop or rise)

-1.4GB of RAM

A launch trailer for the open beta also released:

I downloaded the mod and played around on its single map just a bit ago. As a whole, it’s definitely pretty cool.

The brand-new Coruscant map is fun to play and it’s certainly interesting to see Supremacy (an EA Battlefront mode) playable in Battlefront II.

In places, the mod makes Battlefront II the best looking I’ve ever seen the game. Because skins for clone troopers and droids utilize Battlefront III assets, the detail is much greater than the default skins (or even some later mods). The game also sees improvements to textures on some other bits, like medical and GONK droids.

Other things from the cancelled Battlefront III get carried over, too. These include X2, a clone trooper and playable hero for the Republic (who was meant to be a main character in the original Battlefront III campaign).

I did run into a few bumps, however. Grenade animations don’t always seem to trigger, though I believe the tossed grenade still deals explosive damage. There are also a few places where the AI seem to ghost through the floor. However, these issues are understandable given that it’s fan-built and still in beta.

I’m certainly curious to see where this mod goes. The creators have definitely done a solid job so far, and I think the finished product has excellent potential.
