Obsidian Entertainment open to crafting KOTOR sequel
As creators of critically acclaimed games like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II and Fallout: New Vegas, Obsidian Entertainment would be perfect fit to develop KOTOR III.
In an AMA session on Reddit yesterday, employees at the studio expressed excitement towards possibly doing just that.
After a fan asked when the studio would be doing KOTOR III, Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart replied with: “If you could pitch EA on that for us, I’d be your friend for life. :)”
However, the fact that EA does not own Obsidian poses a challenge.
“The title is out of our hands as EA has the license for the games,” social media manager Mikey Dowling added. “We’d love to return to the galaxy far, far away if we had the chance!”
That said, there is a precedent for the California-based studio in the series. Obsidian’s first title was 2004’s Knights of the Old Republic II. That game was a sequel to now-EA-owned-Bioware’s KOTOR. Obsidian also partially developed KOTOR III before LucasArts eventually canceled the game.
Bioware currently works on the Star Wars: The Old Republic, but the studio might have further plans. SWTOR’s Director of Design, James Ohlen, promised in June that “beyond the Old Republic, there are so many stories that we want to tell.” That’s not a 100-percent confirmation of a new game, but it certainly seems to imply that another Bioware-Star Wars title may be coming at some point.
Rumors have also swirled recently regarding a KOTOR—or even a KOTOR II—HD remake. While something may be in the works, Cinelinx’s Jordan Maison does note that an “internal struggle within EA itself has put it into stasis.”
Most recently, a port of the first game released October 2015 for iOS and Android mobile devices.
So Obsidian may be hard pressed to develop a second Star Wars game. However, the future doesn’t look entirely bleak for those wanting more games set in the KOTOR universe.
