EA calls Battlefront 2 “dramatically larger”; another Star Wars game “very open”
EA’s CFO Blake Jorgensen recently teased several new tidbits about a couple of upcoming Star Wars games at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference earlier today.
In a conference call, Jorgensen first mentioned this year’s Battlefront sequel.
“[The next Star Wars Battlefront] is dramatically larger than the last one,” he said. “It will have a single-player component to it.”
That single-player component, of course, refers to the campaign that was announced by EA at the end of January. No word yet on if this past summer’s Skirmish addition to Battlefront will carry over to the sequel.
Jorgensen also teased that the next Battlefront will be able to bring in new characters from The Force Awakens and Rogue One, both of which weren’t released when the last Battlefront dropped in 2015.
“We’ll add a lot of new Star Wars characters that we didn’t have in the first game two years ago because it was before the two movies that have come out,” he said. “The Star Wars universe is just unbelievable to build games in, because it’s so vast. So, [it’s] very exciting.”
This comment above is very interesting as it seems to hint that we may see more Rogue One characters in the Battlefront sequel. Just Jyn Erso and Director Krennic made it into the current Battlefront (via the fourth DLC that released in December).
Jorgensen also mentioned an untitled Star Wars project. This is likely a reference to the Visceral game, which has 2018 slated for release.
“[…] we’ve got a Star Wars action game, which is very open; it’s great to explore in a Star Wars universe,” he said. “Part of the action genre is all about that exploration.”
Note that Jorgensen may be referring to Respawn Entertainment’s Star Wars game here, but considering the context and the fact that Visceral game is due out sooner, it seems unlikely.
Most recently, the Visceral game was rumored to be about a random smuggler after initially being focused on Han Solo. Besides that, director and Uncharted series vet Amy Hennig insisted that the game won’t be “Star Wars Uncharted”.
Beyond Star Wars, Jorgensen mentioned Bioware’s new IP will be “sci-fi related” and that Motive Studio’s (which is also lending a hand for the Battlefront sequel) new IP is in “very early days” with a goal of becoming its own franchise. He also covered FIFA’s Ultimate Team and touched on Madden 18 and the Need for Speed franchise.
