Inferno Squad’s ship name confirmed for Battlefront II; more actors dialed in

The Imperial Raider-class corvette Corvus in Battlefront II.

Ever since the leaked teaser trailer dropped last week, we’ve known that an Imperial Raider-class corvette would play a role in EA’s Battlefront II. Once the full reveal happened on Saturday, we knew the ship was connected with Inferno Squad.

Now—thanks to the official EA Star Wars Twitter account—we know the ship’s name: Corvus.

In the real world, “corvus” is the Latin word for “raven” or “crow”. It is also the genus name for the group of birds that include ravens, crows and rooks. However, I think the name in the game is more directly related to the Roman boarding device called the corvus. The Roman military utilized the naval vessel during the First Punic War against Carthage. According to history site Livius.org, the corvus could change a naval battle into a land one via a movable bridge that allowed Romans to board Carthaginian ships.

Considering the fact that the Imperial Raider in Battlefront II is also a ship, I’d guess that those at Lucasfilm/EA in charge coming up with its name were at least inspired by the Roman craft. However, I’m merely speculating on that point.

The Imperial Raider class of ships were first introduced to the Star Wars universe in 2015 via an expansion for the X-Wing Miniatures Game. However, the ship’s inclusion in that game was not officially canon. This means Battlefront II is bringing the Imperial Raider into official Star Wars canon. Based on what we know from the game, Raiders are equipped with laser cannons, turbolasers, and ion cannons and some variants carry concussion missiles.

While I assume we’ll at least have cut scenes or missions aboard the Corvus, I’ll be curious to see how controllable the ship is throughout the game’s campaign.

Additionally, two more actors were confirmed to be playing roles in Battlefront II, TJ Ramini and Matthew Mercer:

However, we do not know yet who Ramini or Mercer play in the game. Personally, I suspect they will join previously-announced actors Janina Gavankar and Paul Blackthorne as members of Inferno Squad.

Ramini is a British actor best known for appearing in 11 episodes of the Fox TV show 24 that ran from 2001 to 2010. He also has previous video game experience, appearing in such titles as Uncharted 3 and 4, DOTA 2 and Diablo III.

Mercer has done numerous English dubs of anime and is also known for portraying Leon S. Kennedy in the Resident Evil games.

Battlefront II will release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on November 17. Stay up-to-date on the game’s progress by following SWGO via Twitter or Facebook.
