Images and video of the cancelled Battlefront III surface online

Free Radical’s Battlefront III may have been cancelled, but it has been far from forgotten.

The game—which received the axe in 2009, but had some of its concepts ported to Battlefront: Renegade Squadron—has had a long history of videos, images and other bits shared since that fateful cancellation. Most recently, user JakeGreen163 shared a massive image dump from the game on Reddit.

The dump features a slew images, including the Jedi Starfighter above and the Rebel trooper below. There are also UI images of Galactic Conquest, the strategy mode that was a cornerstone of the first two Battlefronts, some interesting diagrams of the game’s ground-to-space mechanic, plus many other UI designs and concepts. From what I can tell, the game was to include maps on at least 12 environments (a similar number to the upcoming Battlefront II), including Tatooine, Hoth, Bespin, Kashyyk, Endor, Yavin IV, the Death Star, Cato Neimoidia, Coruscant and Mustafar.

Besides the images, several videos of footage from the game also arrived online. The video below showcases some of a Tatooine map and the ground-to-space mechanic, as well as a slideshow of the above album.

There’s also this next video, which features a pair of early, work-in-progress cut scenes:

It’s always interesting to see bits and pieces from this game. Probably the biggest loss of Battlefront III’s cancellation is that we went roughly 10 years without a new Battlefront game. However, I enjoyed EA’s first Battlefront and I’m hopeful for the direction the next Battlefront II is going, which softens the blow just a bit.

That looks amazing. I wish that could be in Battlefront II.
