Darth Vader VR demo teased at Apple’s developer conference
At Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference 2017 keynote today, Industrial Light & Magic’s John Knoll showed off a virtual reality demo featuring Darth Vader.
The demo was part of a sequence highlighting the new iMac’s ability to create content in VR with the HTC Vive VR headset. The demo itself showed Darth Vader outside his castle on Mustafar, while a Lambda Class shuttle landed and TIE Fighters flew overhead.
The bit featuring the demo can be watched via the keynote’s video-on-demand at Apple.com. The Star Wars-specific part begins at 38:10 in the video.
You can also catch the main sequence of the demo thanks to this GIF shared by TechCrunch’s Twitter account:

From what I can gather, this is a demo specifically designed for Apple’s WWDC. It doesn’t directly relate to the VR movie experence centered around Darth Vader announced by ILMxLab and Lucasfilm last July. However, I’m sure the wizards at ILMxLab will—at the very least—utilize bits and pieces of the technology that was shown off in today’s demo.
