Let’s break down possible Rebel outfits for Battlefront’s Death Star DLC
Every day that passes means we’re that much closer to the Death Star DLC in Battlefront.
Yesterday, I took a look at what the new Imperial skins might be coming soon. Today, I thought I’d consider what Rebel outfits could arrive. Note that while we know the Imperials are getting new skins, we don’t know if the Rebels will be getting some.
Of course, the Rebels have gotten new skins for each expansion update (the Weequay with Outer Rim and the Wing Guard with Bespin). I wouldn’t be surprised if one or two arrived alongside the Death Star as well.
As the Rebels don’t have nearly as many options as the Imperials, this list is a bit shorter. Regardless, here’s what I’ve managed to dig up:
Rebel Marines
Rebels in the Death Star concept art below wear these outfits, making them almost assuredly confirmed. We don’t know yet if they’ll be the default skin for the expansion or a purchasable one equippable on any planet.
Personally, I’d guess that we’ll see them only on the Death Star. This hunch comes because all five of the soldiers in the concept art don this outfit.
Regardless, I’ll definitely be glad to see this outfit arrive in Battlefront. For me, the fact that the Rebels first wore it aboard the Tantive IV in A New Hope makes it a classic look.
Note that LucasFilm currently designates the term “Rebel Marine” under the “Legends” banner of Star Wars canon. I merely used the moniker to differentiate this Rebel outfit from others currently in-game. The term originated in Battlefront II where the Rebel Marine was an infantry-centric trooper in space battles. They came equipped with the DH-17 blaster rifle, a HH-15 missile launcher and four thermal detonators.
Cybernetic Skin
Just before Bespin released in June, sharp eyes spotted the Cybernetic Female skin in YouTube footage. Rocking something similar to the AJ^6 cyborg construct worn by Lando Calrissian’s aide Lobot, I’m not a huge fan of this skin. However, it is possible that the cyborg construct will somehow work into the new dynamic customization promised by Battlefront’s lead designer Dennis Brannvall.
Depending on how this dynamic customization functions, it’s possible that the cyborg construct will be an item that can be equipped on any head of your choosing. You could then swap the head and cyborg construct on the base Rebel outfit, a wing guard outfit or perhaps future, unannounced outfits.
I’m not sure if it’ll actually work like that. Still, a mechanic like this would allow players to fine-tune just how they want their character to appear.
Rebel Pilots
Worn by Rebel X-Wing and Y-Wing pilots during the attack on the first Death Star, the orange flightsuit is an iconic design.
Featuring a white flak vest with a life support box on the chest, black thermal gloves and black insulated boots, this would be a lot of fun to see in Battlefront. The white helmet with the orange visor is also on point. There is the cold-weather version of the flightsuit, but I’d guess we’d get the style worn by pilots in A New Hope.
The flightsuit would mesh nicely with the customization update because you would be able to swap heads as you like. Having a new outfit like this would be an excellent way for DICE to promote the customization change.
Technically, this design is already in Battlefront. Because it’s never meant to be seen up close, however, the model is rather low-poly:
One possible issue with the suit is that it might be a bit too easy for Imperials to pick out the orange color. Regardless, Battlefront is about having fun and living out that Star Wars fantasy. I’d be willing to trade a couple of deaths here and there for an opportunity to see this in Battlefront.
Another alternative to this pilot suit, or perhaps in addition to, is allowing for different colors or helmets. A-Wing pilots in Return of the Jedi wore a green flight suit, while both A-Wing and B-Wing pilots donned different helmets. However, it’s probably more likely we’ll just get the classic orange flightsuit.
Other Rebel Outfits
There are a few other potential outfits. Looking at the image above, I see two possible choices.
The first look sits on the far left. Similar to the Rebel Vanguards in the Battlefront II, this outfit has a beige jumpsuit with white helmet. From what I’ve gathered, this uniform belongs to hangar technicians.
Note that this look is different from Princess Leia’s current honor guard in Battlefront; those guys are shown in Episode IV when the heroic trio enters the temple hall. Still, it is awfully similar to the honor guards and I would rather see Rebel pilots, if given the choice.
The second uniform is the dark brown outfit with beige hats. The Rebel Legion categorizes this look as “Rebel Junior Officers”. Similar to the hangar technicians, I don’t really think it would bring too much to the table and I would again prefer the orange flight suit.
Finally, we come to the uniform worn by Captain Antilles as he is strangled by Darth Vader aboard the Tantive IV:
I actually really like this outfit. I could see it complementing the Rebel Marine uniform as an unlockable skin (assuming the Marine outfit is the default for the Rebels). His jacket is somewhat reminiscent of the default Rebel uniform for Sullust. It also fits in perfectly with the 1970s sci-fi vibe of the movie. Still, if I had to choose, I would take the Rebel pilot uniform over this one.
Alien Races
I suppose there could also be a new alien race. We could also get gender-swapped versions of races we already have, but I would prefer entirely new races if possible. It’s also worth noting that Branvall previously stated that Mon Calamari won’t be making an appearance.
I’m not really sure which race could make it in, so I thought I’d throw out some possibilities:
I must confess that most of these races I simply pulled out of the Mos Eisley cantina scene from A New Hope with the help of this guide!
And there you have it! The Death Star will be upon us in a few short weeks.
