Looks like Star Wars won’t be coming to LEGO Dimensions anytime soon
With the recent cancellation of Disney’s Infinity, a chance for Star Wars to come to LEGO Dimensions opened up.
However, TT Games producer Mark Warburton recently chatted with Eurogamer at EGX 2016 in Birmingham, England and Star Wars’ arrival in the LEGO playset video game doesn’t look likely.
Speaking about both the Star Wars and Marvel properties, Warburton said, “We talk to them all the time—Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens is out there, we just released new Lego Marvel DLC.”
Warburton also added that TT Games is fine keeping LEGO Marvel and Star Wars separate from LEGO Dimensions.
“With my Lego Dimensions hat on?” he said. “We have two different streams on the go—Dimensions is one, then we have our Marvel game and Star Wars… We’re happy with the trajectory of Lego Dimensions.”
Disney announced back in May that Infinity was shutting down, alongside the closure of Disney Interactive Studios. Infinity is a sandbox-style “toys-to-life” game where collectible figurines unlock in-game characters and levels.
LEGO Dimensions was somewhat of a competitor. Using LEGO minifigures instead of the more action figure-type pieces in Infinity, Dimensions allows players to mess around in digital worlds built with LEGOs.
The third edition of Infinity, which launched August 2015, included characters and levels from the Star Wars universe. Because LEGO games have meshed with the brand previously, most recently with LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it seemed possible that Dimensions might pick up the IP. However, based on Warburton’s comments, that doesn’t seem to be the case.
Personally, I’m not too terribly invested either way. Infinity was a neat idea; however, I never really managed to get into the whole collecting characters thing. Still, the game had fun mechanics and was enjoyable to play with friends. I have yet to play Dimensions, although the other LEGO video games are a blast to play.
