New video provides potential clues for Battlefront 2, concept art
Thanks to a recent video from EA’s Motive Studios, we may just have a few hints regarding next year’s Battlefront 2.
In the video, titled “Motive | Meet the Team,” a new piece of possible Battlefront 2 concept art is shown off. The Montreal-based Motive is currently working on the Battlefront sequel alongside DICE.
The new concept art featured in the video is likely for Battlefront 2 (although that’s unconfirmed and could theoretically be for Motive’s upcoming and unnamed IP):
Star Wars HQ surmises in this video that the above concept art may be of Sullust, as the planet featured geysers in Legends. I’ve also seen the sinkhole planet Utapau tossed out as a possibility. However, I’m guessing that it’s probably an unknown planet that may feature in Episode VIII. Regardless, I’m certainly looking forward to possibly seeing this enviroment in Battlefront next year!
Also noteworthy in this concept art: you can make out what might be a Star Destroyer just right of the artist’s hand.
A door can also be seen, although it’s uncertain what this exactly pertains to:
Again, I’m not sure what this door leads to or what planet it’s on. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if this winds up being in the next Battlefront.
While shown previously, there is a slightly better look at a Rebel pilot entering an X-Wing:
It’s worth noting the X-Wing the Rebel is climbing into seems to be of the T-65 variety, possibly indicating a Original Trilogy presence for Battlefront 2.
This piece of concept art also made it in, though it too has been featured in previous videos:
As shown by the TIE Fighter, it appears to be from a conflict involving the First Order (as opposed to the Empire).
The video also included some quotes from various Motive employees working on Battlefront 2.
“We have expertise from the action-adventure genre,” said Motive general manager Jade Raymond. “The team at DICE appreciates that and trusts the team and is really been like, ‘Okay, this is what you guys know what to do, so go ahead and run with it!’ ”
While Raymond still doesn’t mention a single-player campaign here, her comments certainly seem to heavily hint that Motive is indeed focusing on single-player, while DICE is taking the lead for multiplayer.
Raymond also touched on how Motive has covered the Star Wars property.
“On Star Wars, the approach we took is a different one,” she said. “We started with each individual designer, thinking about what they want to do and bringing that to the table and then seeing how we create the game out of that, rather than a top-down approach.”
Other quotes also perhaps hint at a campaign:
“Our objective is for the journey of making this game to be as surprising and exciting as the journey the player will have playing this game,” said content producer Paola Jouyax.
Finally, while hardly surprising, Battlefront 2 has also been confirmed to be running on the Frostbite engine, which the 2015 edition ran on.
