Battlefront’s servers aren’t going away anytime soon

If you’re worried that EA will be shutting down Battlefront’s servers soon, don’t be.

According to community manager Mat Everett, the game’s servers will still be up and running for a while yet.

“Rumors of servers going offline are 100% false,” he wrote on the official forums. “The Star Wars Battlefront servers will be going strong for time to come.”

Personally, I find it strange that some might believe that Battlefront servers will shut down soon. For starters, the game is barely a year old. EA/DICE has also previously implied that they intend to support the game up until the sequel.

Even after the sequel launches, I wouldn’t be shocked if EA kept the current Battlefront servers up for a little while longer. For reference, Battlefield 3 (another DICE game) still has active servers despite the game being over five years old.

However, any guesswork on the exact length of time Battlefront’s servers will be active is ultimately pure speculation beyond what Everett said above.

Servers are integral to Battlefront. As it is online multiplayer focused, the game relies on EA-owned servers. These servers allow players to connect to one over another via lobbies and compete in multiplayer matches. A server shutdown would prevent players from playing online.

Everett also touched on the recently announced client patch for the game:

“As for specifics of the upcoming update, we will post those details as the patch is made available as we typically do. I will confirm what I can ahead of that as well as soon as I get a green light to do so.”

This likely means that the exact date for the patch will be announced a day or two in advance. Patch notes will then likely be posted after the patch is deployed on systems.

Producer Paul Keslin added that a specific date for the client patch isn’t set just yet.

“I will only provide a date once we know we’ve cleared all of our QA checks (internal and external),” he wrote. “Once we’ve done that I can provide a date for you to look forward to.”

According to Keslin, this ambiguity is because he doesn’t “want to create confusion if [they] have to move things out because [they] failed a check somewhere and need to redo things, resetting [their] clock.”

While it’s a shame we don’t have a specific date just yet, it’s certainly reassuring to see that EA won’t be closing shop on this game anytime in the near future!
