Don’t expect news on Respawn’s Star Wars game anytime soon

Very little has been revealed on Respawn Entertainment’s Star Wars game and it doesn’t look like that will change in the near future.

In a post on the official Titanfall 2 blog, Respawn mentioned the game as part of their future plans:

Titanfall isn’t the only game being worked on here at Respawn. Stig Asmussen, who previously worked on the God of War franchise, has been leading a separate team that has been quietly working away on our Star Wars title. That project is still wrapped in secrecy and we won’t be talking about it for a while.

As Star Wars games’ publishing company EA has labeled the title’s launch date as sometime beyond 2018, this revelation isn’t too surprising. However—I’m putting on the speculation cap here—it could indicate that we won’t be hearing about this game at either Star Wars Celebration in April or EA PLAY in June. Instead, EA/Lucasfilm/Disney might be putting their sole Star Wars gaming focus on the next Battlefront, which comes out later this year.

So what do we know about Respawn’s Star Wars game?

EA has noted that the title from the Titanfall developer will be a third-person action-adventure game. It also “takes place in a different timeline” than what EA has explored in their Star Wars titles and features “a different style of gameplay”.

Reading into the timeline bit, perhaps it might mean that the game will revolve around the Clone Wars era, but that’s just speculation for now.

EA has also shared some video of motion capture work for the game. That scene focuses on lightsaber combat, so hopefully the game itself will revolve around fluid lightsaber battles.

Respawn’s co-founder Vince Zampella also told Glixel back in October that the game will be about “about the character and their experiences.” However, he failed to elaborate further.

Beyond that, Zampella revealed in October that EA almost rejected  the studio’s pitch for the game. Meanwhile, the title’s director, Stig Asmussen wrote in a blog post last May that “developing a game within the ever-expanding Star Wars universe opens up so many paths for us to go down, and an unparalleled playground to design within.”

Respawn’s game is part of a trio of Star Wars games announced by EA. Besides the Battlefront sequel due out this year, Visceral Games is working on a Star Wars game that’s slated for a 2018 release. Past those three games, EA teased that “some other projects” are in “early pre-production”, but the company hasn’t revealed anything specific.
