EA says Battlefront II will have 3X’s more content at launch than previous game

EA finally put a number on how big Battlefront II will be thanks to a recent earnings call.

Speaking during today’s investor event, EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson promised that the game will be much larger that EA’s first foray into the Battlefront franchise in 2015.

“Star Wars Battlefront II will have more than three times the content than the previous game at launch,” he said. “With a brand new story, a new single-player campaign, new modes, characters, vehicles and planets from all eras in the Star Wars universe.”

He later added: “When we say we believe the game is three times the size in terms of content, we’re very serious about that. Our expectation is that the large, engaged, passionate fanbase of Star Wars fans around the world are going to love everything that we’re doing.”

For those keeping score at home, the last game launched with 13 total maps across four planets, 11 weapons, 10 vehicles and six heroes. How Wilson came up with the “three times” number is uncertain, so it’s not quite clear how many specific maps, weapons, vehicles and heroes we might get in Battlefront II when it arrives later this year on November 17.

Next, Wilson played coy on how EA will support Battlefront II post-launch, merely saying that the game will have “a live service plan that will continue to add even more fun for the global community.”

“As we think about the live services, we’re not talking in great detail about it now,” he later added. “We have a very, very robust live services plan that we’re going to be talking about in the coming weeks and months, particularly around EA PLAY and E3 in just a few weeks time.”

Wilson’s statements echoed an official statement from EA after Battlefront II’s creative director Bernd Diemer said the game wouldn’t have a season pass.

Edit: EA’s CEO Blake Jorgensen also said this regarding live services and DLCs: “You’ll see some changes to our approach—particularly with Battlefield and Battlefront—over time that make those DLCs less important because it is ongoing content that’s being delivered.”

EA PLAY will run June 10 to 12, while E3 is slated for the days after. We don’t know EA’s specific plans for Battlefront II that week, but it really seems that they’ll be focusing on the multiplayer and post-launch side of things then.

Jorgensen then touched on the company’s sale expectations for Battlefront II.

“We sold 14 million units of Battlefront 1 in the year it was shipped and built into our guidance [for Battlefront II] is essentially the same number,” he said. “Our aspirations are clearly to sell more. We think this will appeal to not just to the broad Star Wars fanbase, but also to the deep, heavily engaged Battlefield fanbase and Battlefront fanbase. We see that as a critical part of the success to this game going forward. We’ve got the depth and the breadth to the game that will help that.”

Finally, Wilson noted that during the 2019 fiscal year, Visceral’s upcoming Star Wars action-adventure game will debut. That would put its launch window between April 2018 and March 2019. Wilson also promised that Respawn’s Star Wars game is still promised to launch sometime “further out” after Visceral’s game.

Battlefront II is slated to arrive on November 17 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. To stay up-to-date on all things Battlefront II, follow SWGO on Facebook or Twitter.
