Major DDOS attack affects Battlefront forums, servers (Updated x2)

An AT-AT attacking Rebels in Battlefront.

Users are reporting issues with in-game servers and forums for Battlefront.

This is likely due to a major DDOS attack afflicting a large portion of the Internet. As reported on by several major media outlets, DNS hosting company Dyn was hit with a DDOS attack earlier this morning. This initial attack impacted websites on the East Coast of the United States; however, it has since spread.

I have been able to log onto in-game servers on both Xbox One and PC on West Coast USA. However, others haven’t been so fortunate. Note that with the DDOS attack on Dyn, this doesn’t necessarily mean the servers are down; rather, the attack has disrupted service between your system and the servers.

I’ve been further able to log into Battlefront’s api via the companion service, but that doesn’t mean it works for everyone.

Additionally, I am unable to access game’s official forums at the time of this writing. Others also reported this issue.

Twitter is also seemingly down in my area. This is impactful for me because the service is a primary source for news.

I’ll be keeping an eye on the situation and will update if we learn more. Feel free to let me know down in the comments if you’re have issues with any Star Wars related services.

Edit: To clarify, the accessibility of services can depend greatly on your location. This attack has mainly impacted US websites and services. As such, depending on where you are located, you may not experience similar outages. Here’s the internet outage map from DownDetector (taken at around 1:25 p.m. PT). As you can see, the primary areas of impact are in the United States:

outage

Update 1:50 p.m. PT: I am now able to log into both the forums and Twitter. Note that there could still be outages elsewhere, but it’s looking alright from the West Coast USA.

Update 2:25 p.m. PT: According to Forbes, botnets involving hacked cameras played a role in today’s attacks.
