The new Rogue One trailer and what it means for Battlefront
After a long wait, the second trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story dropped last night.
With the promise of the fourth expansion for Star Wars Battlefront being Rogue One-centric, I thought I’d take a look at what the trailer’s reveals might mean for the game. I will be skipping through bits as I’ll just focus on stuff that might pertain to Battlefront.
First off, we got a glimpse of Jedha. While we probably won’t get to play on the planet, as the DLC will be likely be based solely on Scarif, the desert Force-Mecca would add some much-needed urban warfare:
Our next look at something that might arrive in Battlefront is a glimpse of the troop-transporting U-Wing:
Baze Malbus then fires his blaster and dispatches a number of Stormtroopers quickly. I’ve attached an older still which grants us a better view of the gun, as its appearance in this trailer was during a dark scene:
This next shot has been shown off before, but it would be awesome to see more ground vehicles in the game, even if it’s on the Imperial side. This tank also seems to have two pilots, which could potentially add some interesting gameplay elements (plus we get a shot of a Stormtrooper rocking the T21!):
Then we see Rebel soldiers exiting the U-Wing. Hopefully the ship (if it does indeed come with the expansion) retains this ability to transport multiple players across the battlefield; it would build an extra dimension not currently found in Battlefront:
The trailer then immediately cuts to the assault on Scarif. Here, we not only get a better feel for the planet, but we get a better sense of what the default Rebels skins might be for the DLC:
Additionally, both the centered Rebels are carrying new weapons. I don’t recall ever seeing the one on the left, but the gun carried by the Rebel on the right does appear in earlier footage and makes several appearances in this trailer. It seems like a beefed-up rifle cousin of the DH-17:
The Imperial tank is then active on Jedha. Besides providing another reason why Jedha would be appealing from an urban warfare perspective, it’s cool to see the tank in action. The dark robed character on the bottom left is also wielding what appears to be a new weapon:
This is another previously seen shot, but we get a look at the Death Troopers and their carbine blasters:
After one of the new Imperial shuttles blowing up and a Rebel carrying what might be a pulse cannon, we see Baze launching a rocket at one the AT-ACTs on Scarif. Because there is already a rocket launcher in Battlefront, I’m not fully certain what this gun’s purpose might be, but it looks pretty sweet:
Jyn Erso, who will be the Rebel hero in the DLC, then confronts a TIE Fighter. In this scene, we get a shot of her pistol, which also appeared in the earlier trailer. Because she carries this pistol throughout multiple phases in the movie, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was her primary blaster for Battlefront:
As the camera cuts to a following shot of Jyn, we can see Scarif in the background. A map with some sort of vertically, as shown on this platform, could provide a break from other beach-oriented maps:
Finally, we get a glimpse of Darth Vader. While his presence won’t add anything new to the game, I’m certainly looking forward to taking down Rebel scum on Scarif as the Dark Lord of the Sith:
Rogue One the movie comes out December 16. No firm date has been set for Rogue One the expansion, other than “in December“.
