Although Chewbacca stole the limelight on Monday, gamescom dominated the news this week. Here are The Star Wars Game Outpost’s top five highlights for the week ending August 19:
1. The Death Star DLC’s new mode is called Battle Station
Certainly the biggest Star Wars news to come out of gamescom was about Battle Station. The mode exclusive to next month’s expansion will feature three phases. First, the Rebels must fight past a Star Destroyer. Next, they have to extract a droid from inside the Death Star. Finally, the Rebel Alliance needs to destroy the Death Star, just like in Episode IV. The phases will transition between one another with a cinematic.
Gameplay footage of the mode’s first phase was uploaded to YouTube, but EA eventually took the video down. Luke’s X-Wing and Vader’s TIE Advanced will also be playable during the third phase of the mode.
2. R2-D2 will be coming to Battlefront as a playable character
Battlefront lead designer Dennis Brannvall revealed in a Twitch stream that R2-D2 will be playable during the second phase of Battle Station when the Rebels must extract the astromech from the Death Star. Biggs and Wedge will be playable in the third phase of Battle Station as Luke’s wingmen, too!
R2-D2 will be fully controllable and will feature abilities such as scan ping and shock prod.
3. We learned a bit more about Chewie and Bossk
Hero designer Guillaume Mroz revealed that the two heroes for the Death Star DLC were in their alpha stage at the start of the week. He also revealed that Chewie’s bowcaster will function differently from the current Star Card. The Wookie will not take damage from his weapons.
Additionally, Brannvall confirmed that Chewbacca proved difficult to program due to the walking carpet’s luscious hair.
4. The Star Wars X-Wing VR experience will be focused on Rogue One
During EA’s livestream, Criterion Games’ Pete Lake revealed that the Star Wars project for PlayStation VR will be called Star Wars Battlefront Rogue One: X-Wing VR Mission. The experience will allow players to take to space in an X-Wing and dogfight with TIE fighters.
There will also be an area available pre-flight that allows players to open/close the X-Wing’s S-foils and look around at AT-ATs.
The experience will be available free this holiday for PlayStation VR owners with a copy of Battlefront.
5. A pair of cancelled games featuring Darth Vader and Chewie were unearthed
In a video for DidYouKnowGaming, Unseen64 revealed that there were a couple of cancelled Star Wars games.
One was Dark Squadron, a spinoff of Rogue Squadron that centered around Darth Vader. The other was an action-adventure game led by Chewbacca. Unfortunately, neither game got released; Dark Squadron was cut due to budgetary reasons while George Lucas himself gave the axe to the Chewbacca title.
