Battlefront’s lighting artist toils away on Death Star DLC

Luke, Han and Chewie on the Death Star.

While some finished their work on Battlefront’s Death Star DLC this past week, others continue to press on.

Oscar Carlen, the lighting lead for Battlefront, tweeted earlier today: “I have to double my effort today, even though you are not supposed to work on Sundays. Trying to make the Emperor happy.”

That Carlen is still working on the Death Star is not all too surprising. The game’s lead designer Dennis Brannvall noted during the Outer Rim livestream in March that the lighting artists get to a level last.

“They’re always the ones who come in the latest to the level because it needs to be finished by then,” he said about the game’s VFX and lighting crew. “So they come in pretty late and they have to work really hard, really fast, but the results are absolutely breathtaking.”

Dennis also said earlier in the livestream that “our lighting artist is absolutely amazing,” probably referencing Carlan’s work.

Because level artist Daniel Cambrand completed his work earlier this week, but Carlen is still at work, a September 20 release date for the Death Star expansion is looking more and more solid. This is especially true considering that certification takes approximately two weeks (this estimation is also based on when earlier DLCs for this game have been completed).

Other Star Wars video game creators are hard at work this Sunday, too. Todd Stashwick, who is writing the untitled Visceral Star Wars project with Amy Hennig, posted on Instagram that he’s “working through the weekend” on the game:
