Rogue One: How it could affect the future of Battlefront

Edrio Two Tubes from Rogue One.

The Rogue One movie brought with it a wealth of new planets to the Star Wars universe.

These planets would be excellent to see in a future Battlefront. With this in mind, this article takes at Rogue One and how it might affect the Battlefront sequel; yesterday, I covered how film pertains to the current Battlefront.

What’s below is simply me speculating on the future and so I’m curious what your thoughts are, whether in the comments below, or via Twitter or Facebook.

[WARNING] Rogue One spoilers will be discussed below! Tread warily if you haven’t seen the movie yet!

Rogue One and the future of Battlefront

While DICE marvelously recreated Scarif in Battlefront, Rogue One also introduced numerous other locales to the Star Wars universe that aren’t in Battlefront. These new locations include:

  • Lah’mu
  • Ring of Kafrene trading post
  • Wobani
  • Jedha
  • Eadu

In addition, the movie returns to a couple of familiar planets missing from Battlefront:

All of these locations would be excellent to see in a Battlefront game. I know I’d love to fight in Darth Vader’s castle on Mustafar, or fly X-Wings through the canyons of Eadu. Jedha City and the trading post at the Ring of Kafrene would make excellent urban combat maps.

There’s also a wealth of new weaponry, alien creatures and characters that would make excellent additions in Battlefront.

Unfortunately, I don’t think we’ll see any new Rogue One locales or other content venture into this Battlefront. However, I do think there’s a chance we’ll get some of Rogue One’s planets featured in the next Battlefront.

On two separate occasions, EA’s CFO Blake Jorgensen has hinted that the Battlefront sequel coming out in 2017 will make use of the new movies (once here and another time here). Because he’s remained vague as to what new movies he’s exactly referring to, it’s possible the next game may include content from Rogue One. His statements also don’t necessarily eliminate the idea that the sequel will carry over content from this game.

Jorgensen also promised that Battlefront 2 will be “a much bigger, a much more exciting” game, implying that it should feature more content at launch than Battlefront did last year. Basing a game solely around The Force Awakens would leave us with only Jakku, Takodana, D’Qar and Starkiller Base. You could also perhaps squeeze in Hosnian Prime (the seat of the new Republic) and Ahch-To (Luke Skywalker’s hermit planet), but those are a stretch. It may also feature content from Episode VIII, which comes out December 15, 2017, right around the Battlefront sequel’s release date of holiday 2017.

However—with the lack of content to draw from—hopefully the Original Trilogy returns in some form. And if the Original Trilogy does make a reappearance in Battlefront, we’ll perhaps get a few new Rogue One locations. It would be awesome to see some maps from this Battlefront make it over (such as Hoth’s Outpost Beta or Jabba’s Throne Room) while also including some new planets from Rogue One, like Jedha or even Lah’mu. Again, because Jorgensen’s comments have been so vague up to this point, anything’s possible.

(One last note: My statements above do not discredit the idea that I’d love to see the Clone Wars in Battlefront. I think the prequels and Battlefront are a perfect mesh, but I’m honestly dubious that we’ll be battling Super Battle Droids as Clone Troopers this time next year in Battlefront.)
